Embracing Intuitive Eating Principles 9 & 10:

Movement and Gentle Nutrition

Welcome back! Today, we’re diving into two pivotal principles of intuitive eating: Movement - Feel the Difference, and Gentle Nutrition. These principles are key in fostering a healthy relationship with your body and food, free from guilt and restriction.

Principle 9: Exercise - Feel the Difference

Exercise, for many, has been clouded by negative associations—often seen as a means of punishment or a requirement for achieving a certain body image. As someone who once viewed exercise through this lens, I can relate. From childhood gym classes to adulthood fitness regimes driven by societal expectations, exercise has lost its joy.

My journey towards healing began when I realized exercise didn’t have to be about calorie burning or perfection. Instead, it could be a celebration of what my body could achieve and how it made me feel. This shift from "exercise" to "movement" was transformative. Whether it’s a morning walk with my dog or exploring nature with loved ones, movement became a way to reconnect with myself rather than a chore on my to-do list.

Overcoming Barriers to Enjoyable Movement

Why do many of us dislike exercise? Perhaps it was associated with punishment, unrealistic expectations, or societal pressures. These negative experiences can taint our relationship with movement, making it difficult to find joy in physical activity.

To truly embrace movement that feels good, start by listening to your body’s cues. Shift your focus from burning calories to how movement energizes and uplifts you. Experiment with different activities until you find what resonates—whether it’s dancing, hiking, or yoga. The key is to move in ways that honor your body and bring you joy.

Principle 10: Gentle Nutrition

Now, let’s discuss gentle nutrition—the art of nourishing your body without rigid rules or guilt. For years, I struggled with conflicting dietary advice and the pressure to eat "perfectly". This confusion often led to stress and dissatisfaction rather than health and well-being.

Gentle nutrition encourages us to honor our taste buds while prioritizing foods that make us feel good. It’s about enjoying a variety of foods without moralizing them as "good" or "bad". When we listen to our bodies and eat intuitively, we naturally gravitate towards foods that energize and satisfy us.

Embracing Choice and Freedom

One of the most empowering aspects of intuitive eating is reclaiming autonomy over our food choices. It’s about tuning into our bodies’ signals, whether it’s hunger, fullness, or cravings, and responding with kindness and understanding.

By releasing the pressure of dietary rules, we can foster a healthier relationship with food. This approach not only improves our physical health but also enhances our emotional well-being. It’s a journey of self-discovery and self-compassion, where every choice is an opportunity to nourish ourselves holistically.

The Intuitive Eating Bill of Rights

To guide you on your intuitive eating journey, here’s the Intuitive Eating Bill of Rights—a reminder of your entitlements as you navigate this path:

  1. I have the right to savor my meals without guilt or judgment.

  2. I have the right to enjoy second servings without apology.

  3. I have the right to honor my fullness, even if it means declining dessert.

  4. I have the right to say no to food offerings without feeling obligated.

  5. It’s not my responsibility to please others by overeating.

  6. I have the right to eat foods I enjoy, regardless of others’ opinions.

  7. I have the right to trust my body’s signals and be the expert of my own needs.

As we conclude today’s discussion, I invite you to reflect on your own relationship with movement and nutrition. What changes can you make to embrace joyful movement and gentle nutrition in your life? Remember, this journey is unique to each of us—there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Embrace the process, trust your body, and honor your well-being every step of the way.
